Aerosol, Clouds and Radiation in Tropical Clouds

Tropical Cloud

Within a cloud, a multitude of processes interact that involve, in addition to the cloud droplets, aerosols and radiation. These processes influence the cloud formation as well as the processing of the aerosols and the radiation budget. Convective Clouds are characterized by strong vertical mixing and large vertical extend. They thus involve large amounts of aerosols and cloud particles and significantly influence the radiaton budget. Complexity is increased in the case of frequently occuring mixed-phase clouds where water exists in solid state, liquid state and gas phase.

Cloud investigation at Manaus

To obtain a better understanding of the interaction of aerosols, clouds and radiation in convective clouds, simultaneous measurements of all aspects is desireable. To this end, the ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaign was conducted in September 2014 with the German research aircraft HALO. The great range and high ceiling of this aircraft were important in order to sample the convective clouds with sufficient extend. During the same period, the CHUVA project obtained a multitude of ground-based measurements. In addition, the ARM Aerial Facility (AAF) Gulfstream-1 (G-1) was deployed simultaneously to the Amazon to also obtain measurements of cloud, trace gas, and aerosol properties. Here, the core area was close to Manaus with its pollution plume. In this manner, a multidimensional picture of the relevant processes and parameters can be obtained that allows for a more thorough study of the observed phenomena and more critical validation of the present state-of-art meteorological models.

The ACRIDICON (short for Aerosol, Cloud, Precipitation, and Radiation Interactions and Dynamics of Convective Cloud Systems) campaign has been conducted by research groups from major German institutions. Through clustering this consortium can investigate convective clouds simultaneously from different perspectives.
