Welcome Note

Welcome Note by the rector of the University of Leipzig

Ladies and Gentlemen,

on behalf of the University of Leipzig, I would cordially like to welcome you to our congress ”The economization of the knowledge society“.
This year is very special for us. The University celebrates its 600th birthday. On this occasion, we could already witness a whole raft of scholarly and cultural events.

The congress “The economization of the knowledge society. How much economics does the knowledge society need, how much can it stand?” which takes place on the occasion of the festival week December 3-5, 2009, marks the final festivity of our jubilee year.

Referring to the thesis that science and economics interact closely in the 21st century, scientists from different fields of research will discuss this subject.

In a society where the generating, processing and transferring of knowledge is becoming increasingly important, we have to deal critically with these developments. The University, as a crucial institution of the knowledge society, can make an important contribution to this discussion. I wish the conference every success and many innovative and fruitful insights.
Yours sincerely

Prof. Dr. iur. Franz Häuser

Ladies and Gentlemen,
on behalf of the Faculty of Economics and Management Science  I would like to cordially invite you to our congress ”The economization of the knowledge society. How much economics does the knowledge society need, how much can it stand?“ in Leipzig.

With the organisation and implementation of this congress, the Faculty of Economics and Management Science contributes to the jubilee festivities of the University of Leipzig which marks its 600th anniversary this year.

The congress is the product of the faculties’ cooperation and provides the opportunity for an intense exchange of ideas between representatives of different fields of research. It meets with our interdisciplinary demand in research and teaching in a special way.

The starting point is the perception that economical criteria have increasingly played a bigger role in the constitution of the knowledge society in the past decades. Many of these developments are welcome but not all of them. So far, there have only been approaches in the discussion of the role of economical criteria from a basic point of view. This congress will hopefully take us a step further. Renowned national and international speakers will approach the subject from different perspectives and analyse its usefulness. Relating to concrete aspects of the knowledge society, the subject will be discussed in parallel scientific tracks. We expect an exciting and informative congress. I would be delighted to be able to welcome you in December here in Leipzig.
Yours sincerely

Prof. Johannes Ringel
