The University of Leipzig

The University of Leipzig is a classical full university. However, in the past years six research departments emerged, which are not only linked beyond the boundaries of the faculties but also beyond local, national and international boundaries. The university’s success in the Federal- and State Excellence Initiative confirm this taken course.

The six-century story of success of the University of Leipzig began in 1409 when
Magister and Studiosi of the Charles University of Prague moved out of the Czech metropolis due to a change in the voting right to their disadvantage.

The University of Leipzig has been and still is a popular place of study:

The universal scholar Leibniz as well as Lessing, Goethe and Heisenberg were attracted to Leipzig. Today’s Chilean President Michelle Bachelet (meanwhile honorary doctor of the  alma mater) took a German class here in the 1970s to prepare for her later studies of medicine. German Chancellor Angela Merkel successfully completed her studies of physics in Leipzig (she is also an honorary doctor of the University of Leipzig). At present, there are 29.000 students who study in 96 study programs at 150 institutes at the University of Leipzig.
