Diffusion Fundamentals I

Basic Principles of Theory, Experiment and Application
September 22nd - 24th, 2005
Leipzig

150 years after Adolf Fick's and 100 years after Albert Einstein's fundamental papers on diffusion in "Poggendorffs Annalen der Physik und Chemie" and “Annalen der Physik”, respectively, the world-wide community of researchers in the field of diffusion is invited to Leipzig, the place of publication of these papers, to highlight the current developments in the field. Diffusion-Fundamentals I is co-organized by the Universities of Leipzig and Hannover, Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig, Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, Deutsche Bunsengesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie, Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker and DECHEMA.

The scientific programme includes invited plenary talks, covering those topics of diffusion theory, experiment and application, which are in the focus of current research. The talks will address a broad, interdisciplinary audience rather than only the specialists in the different fields. The talks include the following topics:

One and a Half Century of Diffusion: Fick, Einstein, and some Figures before and afterJean Philibert, Paris
From Diffusion to Anomalous Diffusion: A Century after Einstein's Brownian MotionYossi Klafter, Tel Aviv
How two Pairs of Magnetic Field Gradient Pulses Give Access to New Information about Molecular DynamicsPaul Callaghan, Wellington
Solution Dynamics and Self-OrganizationWilliam S. Price, Sydney
Diffusion Measurements in Fluids by Dynamic Light ScatteringAlfred Leipertz, Erlangen
Analogies in Diffusion of Atoms, Animals, Men and IdeasGero Vogl, Wien
Molecular Simulation Studies of Diffusion in Zeolites and Amorphous PolymersDoros N. Theodorou, Athens
Anomalous Transport in Complex Networks Shlomo Havlin, Ramat Gan
Single-File Diffusion far from EquilibriumGunter Schütz, Jülich
Diffusion of Photons in Human TissuesGeorge H. Weiss, Bethesda
Molecular MotorsJacques Prost, Paris
How Molecules Dance in Lipid MembranesIlpo Vattulainen, Helsinki
Biological Interpretation of Anomalous SubdiffusionMichael Saxton, Davis
Diffusion in NanocrystalsAlan Chadwick, Canterbury
Phenomenological Coefficients in Solid-State DiffusionGraeme E. Murch, Newcastle
Solid-State Diffusion and NMRPaul Heitjans, Hannover
Effects of Pore Heterogeneity on Diffusion in NanoporesMarc-Olivier Coppens, Delft
Molecular Diffusion under ConfinementJörg Kärger, Leipzig
Diffusion in Microporous Materials and its Technological ImpactDouglas M. Ruthven, Orono

Each group of plenary talks shall be accompanied by poster sessions. Ideally, the contributions to the poster sessions should be related to the various aspects covered in the plenary talks. Correspondingly, the plenary speakers and the chairpersons of the sessions shall be asked to serve as first reviewers of the poster submissions and shall be encouraged to refer to individual posters during their presentations, whenever appropriate. The following renowned scientists in the field have agreed to serve as chairpersons

Dezsö L. Beke (Debrecen)
Armin Bunde (Gießen)
Jacques Fraissard (Paris)
Heiner Kaden (Meinsberg)
Josef Käs (Leipzig)
Freek Kapteijn (Delft)
Helmut Mehrer (Münster)
Harry Pfeifer (Leipzig)

The conference shall be performed as a low-cost conference (participation fee 185,- €), which implies to rely on information exchange by www as extensively as possible. This will in particular concern the conference contributions, which shall be published in total only electronically, as a special volume of the Online-Journal of the webseite http://www.diffusuion-fundamentals.org.
The conference fee comprises catering during the conference, the social programme, including a Welcome Party on Wednesday, September 21st, the evening before the conference, the informal Conference Dinner in the “Moritz-Bastei” (an old fortification in Leipzig's former city wall) and attendance of the “Motette des Thomanerchores” (Concert in St. Thomas Church, Johann Sebastian Bach's place of activity over a quarter of a century, with the famous Leipzig boys' choir) with a subsequent informal coming together in the restaurant of the historical railway station "Bayerischer Bahnhof" and a Conference Volume containing the plenary talks and poster abstracts.
In addition, participation in sightseeing tours through Leipzig or to a few remarkable places near Leipzig (Wilhelm-Ostwald Memorial Großbothen and Leipzig's "New Zealand"; on Saturday, September 24th, afternoon) and in excursions to Meißen (birthplace of European porcelain) and Dresden (old residence of Saxony) or to Eisenach/Erfurt/Weimar (places of activities of Luther, Bach and Goethe) (on Sunday, September 25th) shall be arranged on request.

Former Alexander von Humboldt awardees are encouraged to ask for travelling support within the Follow-Up Programme of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (E-mail address: followup@avh.de)

Poster
Authors are requested to send their two-pages abstracts via the Internet before April 30th, 2005. Please, follow the format as given under http://diffusion.uni-leipzig.de/pdf/layout-poster-abstracts.doc since only in this case the contribution may be included in the Conference Volume.
