Recently published data on illiteracy among adults in Germany has shown that this problem has been tremendously underestimated during the last decades. As a result of a growing number of research projects it seems necessary to assume that up to 14.5 percent of the working-age population in Germany are  illiterate; that is 7.5 million people.
