Opening a bank account

If you want to open an account with a credit institute in Germany, you will need the following documents:

  • Registration certificate from the Citizens’ Office
  • Passport with residence permit (if necessary)
  • Immatrikulationsbescheinigung (Certificate of Enrolment) from Leipzig University

Students do not normally have to pay account administration charges.

UniCard (student card)

At Leipzig University, your student ID is called UniCard. It will be issued once you have paid the semester fee. We recommend you do this as soon as you have received the online confirmation that the declaration of accepting your study place has reached Leipzig University.

For more useful information about the UniCard is provided under Organising your studies/ UniCard.

The UniCard is your public transport ticket

The UniCard entitles you to use all public transport lines in the MDV area from the beginning of the semester (1 October or 1 April). This so-called MDV-Ticket is valid for one semester (six months).

Your UniCard (having the current semester details imprinted on it) serves as your MDV-Ticket for buses, trams and regional trains throughout the the MDV-area at all times during the semester.
