Registering for modules in bachelor and master programmes

The majority of study programmes at Leipzig University consist of seminars, lectures, tutorials etc., all grouped into thematic bundles. These are called modules. Students take different types of modules, i.e. compulsory, compulsory elective and key qualification modules. All bachelor and master students must register for their modules at the start of each semester. This involves registering for the module classes and for the module exam.

Module registration is carried out in phases, with specific registration periods for each of the following:

Registering for core subject modules

When: Each semester, module registration for core subject modules takes place app. 2 weeks before classes start. Please check your faculty's website (e.g. Office for Study Affairs/"Studienbüro" and/ or institute) by the end of September to find out about the exact dates and procedure for your module registration.

Course catalogue: Find out in AlmaWeb which modules and courses are provided for the upcoming semester (the catalogue is being updated continously).

Tool und AlmaWeb: Currently, module registration is carried out through two different electronic systems - Tool and AlmaWeb. To find out about which system you need to use for module registration, please check the table (content is in German).

Support: Some faculties provide their students with on-site councelling and support during module registration. For detailed information, please check the website of your Office for Study Affairs ("Studienbüro").

Registering for key qualification modules

Each semester the current offer in key qualification (SQ) modules for bachelor programmes is published online in AlmaWeb (is being updated continously).

Winter semester 2017/18: Please use the online registration system Tool to register for SQ modules and observe the following procedure and deadlines:

  • 27.09. (12:00 noon) till 05.10. (5:00pm):
    You select up to 3 modules and preliminarily register for them in Tool.
  • 06.10. (app. 12:00 noon) till 08.10.:
    You confirm your module/s. If necessary, you select your module courses. By confirming your module/s you automatically sign up for the relevant module exams. Find out how to confirm your module/s in Tool after 06.10.
  • after 08.10.:
    In case you need to, you are free to apply for open module places. Details about how to do so will be published in Tool ("open module places").

If you need help, please contact the person responsible for module registration in your core subject at your Office for Study Affairs ("Studienbüro") or institute. Some faculties provide their students with on-site councelling and support during module registration. For detailed information, please check the website of your Office for Study Affairs.

In case you should need assistance and it is not provided by your Office for Study Affairs or institute please write an email to the staff at Central Office for Study Affairs ("Studienkoordination").

Registering for modules of the elective area

Each semester the current offer in compulsory elective modules for bachelor programmes is published online in AlmaWeb (the catalogue is being updated continously).

Please use the online registration system Tool to register for SQ modules and observe the following procedure and deadlines:

  • 27.09. (12:00 noon) till 05.10. (5:00pm):
    You select up to 3 modules and preliminarily register for them in Tool.
  • 06.10. (app. 12:00 noon) till 08.10.:
    You confirm your module/s. If necessary, you select your module courses. By confirming your module/s you automatically sign up for the relevant module exams. Find out how to confirm your module/s in Tool after 06.10.
  • after 08.10.:
    In case you need to, you are free to apply for open module places. Details about how to do so will be published in Tool ("open module places").
