Indology, Tibetology and Mongolian Studies



For the bachelor porgramme: English B2, another foreign language A2 or knowledge of Latin.

For the master programme: bachelor degree in Indology, Tibetology and Mongolian studies or a comparable degree required: if the student intends to extend their knowledge of a Southern Asian language, evidence of 40 credits in this language must be provided, if the student intends to extend their knowledge of a Central Asian language, evidence of 30 credits in this language must be provided, aptitude test

The programme is concerned with intellectual and cultural development in the regions of Southern and Central Asia in the past and the present. The focus is on the languages and literatures of the cultural region of India, Tibet and Mongolia. The programme comprises three subject areas: study of two of the four languages offered (Sanskrit, Hindi, Tibetan, Mongolian), source reading and interpretation methods, use of the first two areas to address phenomena of the cultural and intellectual history of the Southern and Central Asian region. Thanks to the partnership between the Universität Leipzig and the Halle-Wittenberg Martin Luther University, programmes attended in Halle relating to Indology and Southern Asian Studies can be accredited.
