Description

This international, interdisciplinary and research-oriented programme deals with issues relating to sustainability, the environment and development and with the challenges in making the transition to a sustainable society. Students consider the opportunities and problems of the change from different perspectives, gaining a high level of broad expertise in current and future issues regarding sustainable development. The programme stands out due to its great relevance to society and its high level of interdisciplinarity. It prepares students for Ph-D work and for work in other scientific areas, and also for a broad spectrum of jobs in companies, organisations or public institutions. A period abroad of at least one semester is an integral part of the programme. The reciprocal agreement with universities in Graz (Austria), Leipzig (Germany), Utrecht (the Netherlands) and Venice (Italy), plus cooperation with universities in Basle (Switzerland) and Hiroshima (Japan) gives students the opportunity to study in various places. In the first semester students discuss and debate the fundamentals of sustainable development. In addition to topics such as climate protection, urban geography and urban sociology, sustainability and environmental management in companies, students complete selected programmes on economic and management science, plus a module on the subject of globalisation research. In the second semester students specialise during a semester abroad. Depending on their prior knowledge, aptitude and personal interests, students choose a main focal point from the wide range of programmes offered by the participating universities. The language of instruction is English. Universität Leipzig offers the foreign participants in the master programme two fields of specialization: * Resources Management (Water Resources Management, Sustainable Energy Economics, Land Management) * Environmental Technology (Air Pollution Technology and Safety Engineering, Water, Wastewater and Waste Treatment, Energy Engineering and Management). For programmes offered by the other universities, please refer to the programme page. The third semester consists of project work – a case study or a research project – and two modules on project management and company management. In the final semester students write and defend their master’s dissertation.
