Leipzig’s Research Landscape
Leipzig – the dynamic science centre
Leipzig is the scientific, economic and cultural centre in the heart of Europe – a region with numerous research establishments, an excellent infrastructure, and highly skilled and motivated experts.
The region of Leipzig holds great potential for research and development. The Universität Leipzig, six further universities, 20 non-university research institutions including three Max Planck Institutes, three Leibniz Institutes, two Fraunhofer Institutes, and one Helmholtz Centre form the basis for the innovative combination of pure and applied research and cooperation of science and business. The location is especially known for outstanding research in the fields of life sciences and biotechnology, new intelligent materials, evolution and a strong global orientation with comprehensive expertise in global and area studies.
More than 37,000 students study and do research in Leipzig; the institutions of higher education and the University Hospital alone employ close to 15,000 persons. The expansion of existing research institutions and the establishment of various start-ups and world renowned international companies like Porsche, BMW, DHL and Amazon underline the scientific and economic dynamics of the region.
