Research Activities at the Faculty

  The research activities of the Faculty of Theology comprise personal research projects by faculty, research programmes within postgraduate studies supervised by faculty, and co-operation with other departments and universities.

In 2000, several research projects were continued in traditional areas of the Faculty of Theology. Research was performed in:

  • Ancient Hebrew (Institute of Old Testament Studies)
  • The history of the Reformation, Christian archaeology and Christian art, modern church history and regional church history (Institute of Church History)
  • The history and literature of Judaism (Research Centre Judaism)

New projects focusing on the Septuagint and pseudo-epigraphy have been started following the appointment of a new professor of New Testament Studies.

In addition to the above, other research activities are described in the following periodicals and serials: Lutherjahrbuch, Lutherbibliographie; Die Herberge der Christenheit; Zeitschrift für Althebraistik; Mitteilungen und Beiträge der Forschungsstelle Judentum; Beiträge zur Spiritualität und Liturgie, and Arbeiten zur Theologie- und Kirchengeschichte.

The following projects include other academic institutions:

  • The edition of the political correspondence of Moritz, Duke and Elector of Saxony, is part of the extensive project "Sources and Research into the History of Saxony" (together with the Saxon Academy of Sciences, Leipzig)
  • Learned societies in central Germany (1650–1820) and the correspondence of Gottsched (together with the Saxon Academy of Sciences, Leipzig)
  • Participation in Collaborative Research Centre (Sonderforschungsbereich) 417 "Regionally-oriented Identification Processes: The Case of Saxony", which includes two special projects as well as the project "Theological Aspects of Research into J.S. Bach"

Department of the Late Middle Ages and Reformation

Research on the history of the Reformation including the edition of the Lutherjahrbuch, Lutherbibliographie, a study edition of Martin Luther and how the Wittenbergian reformers are understood and taken note of.

Department of Regional Church History

  • Edition of the political correspondence of Moritz, Duke and Elector of Saxony
  • Church and regional consciousness between the 16th and late-19th centuries within Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 417 "Regionally-oriented Identification Processes: The Case of Saxony"
  • Church and territorial history in Saxony
  • Biographies of Saxon pastors (Sächsisches Pfarrerverzeichnis)

Department of Modern and Contemporary Church History

  • Studies of church history of the 19th and 20th centuries; research on Friedrich Schleiermacher, Adolph von Harnack and the role of the Church during the Weimar Republic and in East Germany
  • Protestantism and culture in Germany from the period of Enlightenment to the mid-20th century

Department of Christian Archaeology and Christian Art

The year book of regional church history Herbergen der Christenheit is edited in collaboration with the working group Saxon Church History.

Institute of Systematic Theology

  • Questions of ecumenical theology; primarily ecumenical ecclesiology
  • Foundations of christology, primarily in connection with biblical studies
  • Theological aspects of research on J.S. Bach
  • Theological basic research in the areas of language analysis, theory of epistemology, theory of truth, and the role of religion and church in the context of secularisation
