Research Activities at the Faculty

The growth in the number of externally funded research projects to 40 in 2000 serves as an indicator for the positive development of research activities at the Faculty of Education. In particular, the participation of the Faculty in an interdisciplinary research programme funded by the National Research Society (DFG) dealing with Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 417 "Regionally-oriented Identification Processes. The Case of Saxony" should be emphasised. Two subprojects within this framework managed by members of the Faculty of Education address the role of education in constructing regional identity. Most of the other externally funded research projects deal with problems of social and educational practice.

Moreover, the growing internationalisation of the Faculty's research activities can be observed. In 2000, co-operation ties existed with 12 countries throughout the world (not only in Europe, but also in East Asia and Africa), demonstrating the faculty's international openness.

Publications by Faculty members in the year 2000 comprised 11 books and 64 articles. A growing number of articles in 2000 were published outside Germany – another example of just how international the Faculty's research activity has become.

Institute of General and Comparative Education, Curriculum Studies and Educational Psychology

Regarding the fundamental educational disciplines of the Institute of General and Comparative Education, Curriculum Studies and Educational Psychology, most of 1999's research activities were continued. The relationship between different ‘collective identities' such as regional/national and European identity is one of the overall topics. Another is the transformation of the educational systems within the political transformation of the former socialist states, which is mainly tackled by the section "Comparative Education". As far as the history of education is concerned, work examined the adoption of educational ideas in other countries, including their influence on educational practitioners. In the field of curriculum studies and teacher education, research into the teaching profession and particular subjects such as ethics is stressed. In addition, various sub-disciplines at the Faculty addressed the (recent) history of education. In particular, the Theodor Litt Research Centre emphasises the importance of recent German history in the field of education by organising an annual symposium on the work of Theodor Litt – a great intellectual resistant of political dictatorship.

An interdisciplinary field of research continued by the Faculty in 2000 was environmental education in its social context. In the field of educational psychology, one special aspect of interest comprised an interdisciplinary investigation of the moral and religious development of children. Attention was also focused on test development for the classroom.

Institute of Primary School Education

The Institute of Primary School Education focused its research activities on educational practice in the classroom. Highlighting the rather pragmatic character of educational studies in general, the same topic constitutes the main object of research of the Centre for Research and Development of Professional Practise in Education, which in 2000 organised a "Regional Educational Forum".

Institute of Adult Education, Vocational and Social Education

Research at the section "Adult Education" of the Institute of Adult Education, Vocational and Social Education tackles issues such as quality management in educational institutions (which is also dealt with by the section "Philosophy of Education"), while the section "Social Education and Social Work" focused one of its main activities on the prevention of juvenile delinquency.

Institute of Special Education

Pursuing the same aim (i.e. developing optimum education), much research in the field of the Institute of Special Education needs is devoted to the problem of integrating handicapped pupils into normal classrooms, as well as to developing diagnostic methods and therapeutic instruments for handicapped people, hence accentuating the important social interest in these types of research.
