Research Profile

In cooperation with other faculties, universities and research institutions, the Faculty combines historical, comparative cultural, artistic-aesthetic and systematic approaches to subjects related political, social and cultural processes in past and present times, ranging from Prehistory and the Middle Ages to Modern and Contemporary History. In terms of world regions, research relates to societies and cultures in Germany, Europe, the Near East, Asia, Africa and Latin America, including the Ancient East and the Ancient World. Some of the institutes integrate aspects of linguistic, philological, cultural, social and economic sciences.

Aspects of globalisation and internationalisation link up with a local focus on the history, art and culture of Leipzig and Saxony.
The Faculty of History, Art and Oriental Studies hals strong links with the Centre of East Central European History and Culture (GWZO) as well as with the Simon Dubnow Institute of Jewish History and Culture, both in research and teaching.
Major interdisciplinary projects at the Faculty involving cooperation with external institutions include the following:

  • Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 586 "Difference and Integration. Interaction between nomadic and settled forms of life in the civilisations of the Old World": Special research programme shared by the Universities of Halle-Wittenberg and Leipzig
  • History of the Universität Leipzig 1409-2009
  • PHD-Program: Transnationalisation and Regionalisation from the 18th Century to the Present
  • PHD-Program: Breaking-area of Globalisation
