The Coordination Centre for Clinical Trials Leipzig (KKSL) went into operation on 1 October 1999. After the end of financing by the German Ministry of Education and Research, the KKSL was confirmed as an institution of the Faculty of Medicine.
The staff comprise medical doctors, pharmacologists, statisticians, computer scientists, psychologists, and administrative personnel.
The goal of this ministerial programme is to create model structures designed to improve the quality of clinical trials. The KKSL has the additional job of increasing the competitiveness of the University Hospital at a national level, supporting scientific cooperation with the hospitals in the region, and offering patients new ways of treatment. In liaison with its financial backers it pursues the following objectives:
- Establishing a powerful expert structure for clinical research in compliance with ICH-GCP standards
- The conception and implementation of innovative and internationally competitive trials in cooperation with scientific study leaders
- Coordinating innovative drug trials by the pharmaceuticals industry and manufacturers of medical products in conjunction with doctors' practices and clinics
- Setting up cooperative regional and national study groups for efficient trial management
- Informing the public about the aims, significance, necessity and ethical dimension of patient-orientated clinical research
