Since May 2003 Dipl.-Media Scientist Markus Beiler (born 1978) is a lecturer at the Chair of Journalism II (Prof. Dr. Marcel Machill) of the Institute of Communication and Media Science of the University of Leipzig, Germany.
He leads the student training course in online journalism and does research on online communication, search engines, Internet governance and international media systems. He is member of the council of the Institute of Communication and Media Science and member of the journalism examining board.
Markus Beiler has been published in several scientific journals (for ex., The European Journal of Communication, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice) and is co-editor of the book "The Power of Search Engines" (March 2007, Herbert von Halem Publishers).
2004/05 Markus Beiler had lectureships at the Leipzig University of Applied Science and the University of Applied Science Mittweida.
From 1999 to 2003 he studied Media Management (Applied Media Science) at the Department of Journalism and Communication Research of the Hannover University of Music and Drama with the major Media Science, the first minor Applied Communication Research and the second minor History at the Leibniz University Hannover. He finished his studies as Media Scientist (M.A. level) with a diploma thesis about selection behaviour of search engine users.
Parallel to his studies he co-operated in media-policy projects with a focus on the co-regulation of the Internet at the Bertelsmann Foundation from 2000 to 2002. Since April 2000 Markus Beiler is the manager of the Association of Young Editors in Lower Saxony.
Markus Beiler is a member of the German Communication Association (DGPuK) and the International Communication Association (ICA).
