International cooperation

International cooperation is crucial in order to improve and standardize sampling designs, observation and measurement methods. Within this scope the University of Leipzig, Special Botany, together with the UFZ () and FU-Confirm organizes the 4th International Canopy Conference 2005 that will take place in Leipzig, Germany from July 10th to 17th.

In the framework of the Leipzig Canopy Crane Project (LAK) following guest researchers performed studies at the crane site:

Dr. Ingo Rieger (University of Basel, Switzerland), bats
Dr. Geoffrey Parker (Smithsonian Institute, USA), canopy structure
Prof. Dr. K. Jaffé (Universidad Simon Bolívar, Venezuela), ants
Lukasz Kaczmarek (University of Pozna, Polen), waterbears (Tardigrada)

Cooperations with persons and institutions listed below will be planned and performed in future:

Prof. Dr. M. Murakami (Hokkaido University, Japan), Cryptogams
Prof. Dr. N. Stork (James Cook University, Australien), tree phenology: Two PhD students from Leipzig are investigating the annual rhythmics of the forest since three years at the Australian Rainforest Canopy Crane in the Cape Tribulation region: Daniela Inkrot and Christian Geyer.
Prof. Dr. C. Körner (University of Basel, Switzerland), endophytic fungi, herbivory, CO2 Experiments.

Intensive contact exists to the following institutions in order to propagate canopy research and to get funding:

Global Canopy Programme (Oxford, Groß-Britannien)

International Canopy Network (Washington, USA)
