Methodology

Interdisciplinary Cooperation
The challenges of future planning processes in megacities are linked to complex, innovative solutions that are based on sustainability and are aiming at an increasing quality of life, especially taking in account the development of open spaces. Important basics for this processes are sound and interdisciplinary scientific analysis.
The goal of this project is to build capacities in local institutions and to jointly create instruments, based on ecological, social and economical criteria, for the use in planning processes in emerging mega cities. For this purpose an interdisciplinary approach of social, human and natural sciences is adopted. Seven research groups are cooperating in the project.

• Urban structures and urban planning
• Urban societies, Sociology
• Urban Geography
• Physical Geography
• Ecology and Biodiversity
• Intra- and peri-urban agriculture
• Urban forestry
• GIS and System Analysis

Results are converted directly into action-orientated proposals to be tested during the project phase.

Methodology steps
1. Data Collection, Documentation, Inventarisation
2. Valuation
3. Identification of influencing Factors
4. Observation of Changes
5. Development of Scenarios
6. Development of Instruments and Alternatives of Action
7. Development and Implementation of a Control System

Joint implementation
Thus it is expected to improve functionality and governance structures in the planning process of this emerging mega city. Expected results of the research project are:
• That urban society and relevant stakeholders in the city administration are aware of the value of open spaces for a sustainable development
• Design of planning and analysis instruments for the development of open spaces, that is used by city administration as well as scientific institutions and universities
• Establishment of a dynamic adaptive planning process with permanent feedback to local stakeholders as well as good communication between the research partners.
