Prof. Winkler gehört zum Kreis der international bekannten Psychophysiologen. Seit bald 20 Jahren beschäftigt er sich damit, wie unser Gehirn akustische Reize verarbeitet. Ein Teil der dabei entstehenden elektrischen Aktivität lässt sich in einem Elektroenzephalogramm (EEG) abbilden. Mit Hilfe dieser Methode hat Prof. Winkler bedeutende wissenschaftliche Beiträge geliefert, die uns helfen zu verstehen, wie akustische Informationen gespeichert und wieder abgerufen werden können.
Seine Publikationsliste weist ihn als äußerst produktiven Wissenschaftler aus, der viele Veröffentlichungen in einflussreichen und anerkannten Zeitschriften vorweisen kann. Im Rahmen seines Aufenthalts in Leipzig als Leibnizprofessor hielt Prof. Winkler neben seinen Forschungsaktivitäten auch zwei Vorlesungen in der psychologischen Fakultät:
- Prerequesites of sound perception in natural situations
- Auditory perception: Theories and experimental results
Seine Antrittsvorlesung "Echoic memory or regularity representation: Sound perception in natural situations" fand am 10. November 2003 im Beckmannsaal, Brüderstraße 34, in Leipzig statt.
