The Department has one of the longest traditions in the field of British Studies, having established a Chair of English Philology in 1876. Today's Department continues the tradition of Philology at Leipzig by offering a programme that brings together a range of sub-disciplines in both its teaching and research. Our main areas of focus are English Linguistics (including the Structure and Function of the English Language), British and New English Literatures, British Cultural Studies (including Ireland and the Commonwealth), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), as well as Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP), including language awareness and intercultural communication.
The Department of British Studies offers BA and MA degree programmes in English, as well as state examination programmes for English teachers. The department also houses the linguistic training for the BA programme in American Studies.
