Edited by CAS Senior Researcher Elisabetta Porcu and Paul Watt (Waseda University, Tokyo), the second issue of the Journal of Religion in Japan includes papers from past lecturers at the Centre for Area Studies as well as current scholars at the University of Leipzig. Inoue Nobutaka’s article, “Media and New Religious Movements in Japan”, is based on his lecture held within the CAS Public Colloquium Summer Semester 2011, while the article, “Materiality and Spiritual Economies in Premodern Japanese Buddhism: A Problem in Historical Change” by Galen Amstutz is an enlarged and revised version of his paper presented at the First Annual Conference of the Centre for Area Studies in October 2010 in a panel organized by Elisabetta Porcu. In addition to three book reviews, Ugo Dessi’s article, “Religion, Hybrid Forms, and Cultural Chauvinism in Japan” is based on his most recent research and is part of his habilitation dissertation submitted to and accepted by the Faculty of History, Arts and Oriental Studies at the University of Leipzig.
