Any kind of understanding involves certain considerations of coherence. The concept of coherence itself is mainly discussed in analytical epistemology, because it has turned out to be an indispensable constituent of modern theories of justification. Nevertheless, the conception of coherence remains underdetermined in all these approaches. In the project 4 "Erklärungskohärenz" (explanatory coherence) a detailed concept of explanatory coherence should be developed on the basis of earlier works of Thomas Bartelborth on coherence. Parallel to this development we want to elaborate a theory of explanation, since a substantial theory of coherence can only be formulated with the help of an informative conception of explanation. Such conceptions have to be tested in the context of scientific explanations and the particular problems that have arisen in this field. We find a good approach to explanation in the unification theories. One version of them was put forward by Thomas Bartelborth within the structuralist view of theories. It will be developed further in a similar framework and should bring to light how the components of a theory can contribute to it's explanatory power.
