The oldest materials belong to Block's and Plischke's expedition to Romania during the First World War. The collection of photographs (722 glass slides) is sorted and catalogued, but it has not been digitalised yet. In addition there exist three folders containing the correspondence between the researchers and the institute's managment.
Tsiganological research in Giessen
The second-oldest materials stem from the work of the “Projekt Tsiganologie” of the Institute for Social Studies at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen which existed there in the 1970s. These include an extensive collection of press-clippings (from regional as well as supra-regional newspapers) from those years, several folders of grey literature from all over Europe and unpublished manuscripts from the then engaged staff members.
SFB 586
The more recent materials emanated from the Project Group A5 of the SFB 586 (first phase 2001 2004) which comprised research on gypsy groups around the area of the Black Sea. They contain several albums of photographs, video recordings (especially from Russia, Ukraine and Moldova) and field notes from the researchers.
The archive is continued within the scope of the FTF and currently therein we are collecting materials especially from Romania and Serbia as well as from Central Asia (Fergana Valley).
