We deal with the research on upper middle atmosphere winds and tides over Central Europe obtained from radio measurements in the low frequency range (socalled D1 method) and will report here about our work.

Research Topics

At the Collm Observatory of the Leipzig University in the last three decades investigations on the upper middle atmosphere have been carried out, above all based on ground-based wind measurements at mesopause heights (80 - 110 km) and pointing on middle atmosphere climatology and the interaction of the different atmospheric layers. In recent years much investigation on parts of these themes has been done, but a systematic classification of the amount of the layer interaction at different time scales (from the spectrum of the internal gravity waves up to interdecadal variations) is still missing.
A contribution to this is made at the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology (LIM). The main research themes are climatology of winds of the upper middle atmosphere, investigations on long-term trends and the interannual variability of the mesopause and the interaction of different atmospheric layers, especially the stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere.
