County Split and Dalmatia
|
The Split and Dalmatia County covers the area of 14,045 km2. Land area including the islands amounts to 4,572 km2 (approximately 8% of the total area of the Republic of Croatia, whereas the sea area covers 9,473 km2. This makes the Split and Dalmatia County the largest County in the Republic of Croatia. The County borders on the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the north, the County of Dubrovnik and Neretva in the east, and the territorial sea frontier of the Republic of Croatia in the south.
The town of Split is the County seat. It comprises 15 towns and 40 municipalities.
The sea and the karst relief are the fundamental natural features of the Split and Dalmatia County. The mountains, cut by rare saddles, run in parallel with the shore. Along the central part of the County (105 km) flows the Cetina river, the longest and economically most important river flow in southern Croatia. This river, with its deep canyon in the lower part of the flow, excels both in outstanding natural beauty and in great accumulation possibilities. Striking sights of nature are also the Imotski lakes: Red Lake and Blue Lake; the Vranjača cave, as well as the magnificent sea coast with a string of islands, peninsulas, inlets, and bays.
The Split and Dalmatia County has a predominantly Mediterranean climate. This mild Mediterranean climate is characteristic of the coastal region, whereas in the mountainous and terrestrial areas it changes into a somewhat harsher submediterranean and mountainous climate. The climate is characterized by relatively mild winters and very dry summers. Yearly precipitation amounts to 59% in winter months, whereas the summer months are characterized by spans of dry periods. Average temperature in Split amounts to 26 degrees in summer and 7 degrees in winter. Average yearly air temperature is 17.4 degrees. The town of Hvar has more sunny days per year than any other town in Croatia. The climate is influenced by the Atlantic frontal disturbance in winter and the Azores maximums in summer, with the sea effect as a decisive factor. The county area is windy all the year round, with little differences between coastal and terrestrial hinterland areas.
