Research Topics

At the Collm Observatory of the Leipzig University during the last four decades investigations on the upper middle atmosphere have been carried out, above all based on ground-based LF wind and meteor radar wind and temperature measurements at mesopause region heights (80 - 100 km) and pointing on middle atmosphere climatology and the interaction of the different atmospheric layers.

A contribution to this is made at the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology (LIM). The main research themes are climatology of winds of the upper middle atmosphere, investigations on long-term trends and the interannual variability of the mesopause and the interaction of different atmospheric layers, especially the stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere.

We use circulation models like the COlogne Model of the Middle Atmosphere COMMA for simulating middle atmosphere winds, waves, and temperatures in the stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere.

At Collm Observatory, also seismological measurements are carried out by the Institute for Geophysics and Geology .
