ACCESS TO COLLM LF WIND DATA

The winds LF wind to November 2008 are calculated using a regression analysis without including the diunal tide, without height resolution and without outlier rejection. Fore many purposes these data thus may only serve as coarse estimates. A documentation is found here. You may, however, also be interested in the monthly reports.

If you should use the data in a publication, please acknowledge our institute („Collm wind data were contributed by the Institute for Meteorology, University of Leipzig“, or something like that). Possible references are, for example:

If your work should mainly or exclusively base on the analysis of our data, we would also prefer collaborative working, with one of our working group being involved. Please contact us in this case (Christoph Jacobi). The wind data are available  in 3 different ASCII data files:

Data Format Example
Daily zonal (voz) and meridional (vom) prevailing winds and zonal semidiurnal tidal amplitudes (v2z) and phases (T2z, in LT=UT+1)

Note: These data are only preliminary, the daily means contain planetary wave information, and the height may vary during one night. The data should be used with care.

Day, Month, Year, approx. Time (always 0 UT), voz, vom, v2z, T2z, N (number of half- hourly means used for analysis). N = 0 means that the wind data are linearly interpolated.  12  8 79  0  19.9 -14.6  13.0   7.2        17
 13  8 79  0  17.2 -10.7  13.8   7.0         0

  8 82 -1  14.9  -4.6  14.9   6.8

We may also calculate monthly mean profiles (until 2007), diurnal tides, and additional variations as the quasi 2-day wave amplitudes and phases. These data are available, too, but the calculations require special analyses. Please contact us if you are interested (jacobi@rz.uni-leipzig.de).

1983-2002 mean profiles of prevailing winds and the semidiurnal tide are found here as ascii table and as as gif files.
