This violin, with its particularly angular body, is characteristic of the instruments built by the violin-making Hopf family of Klingenthal, in Saxony's Vogtland region. Indeed, this violin represents the most important Vogtland violin model. The Hopf family's instruments had a great stylistic impact on many other local violin makers. As is often the case with important historical violins, the one seen here received a new neck some time in the 19th century to accomodate new musical tastes and a different playing technique. One of the consequences of the switch to a different neck was that violins became quite a bit louder.
