Instruments of the famous Venetian lute builder Matteo Sellas are known for the great care and careful attention to detail with which they were made. The rounded back of the guitar pictured here is made of narrow strips of ivory and jacaranda wood. Its beautiful fingerboard was inlaid with two ivory plaques. Even the back of the instrument's neck was decorated with inlays in dark wood and bone. It is thought that the instrument was rebuilt some time in the 19th century, when its body underwent restoration work. At that time its neck was considerably shortened.
