A Musical Gathering
Louis le Nain
French
mid 17th century
Inv.-Nr. 4343
Painting exhibited in  Baroque

Photographer: Janos Stekovics

Chamber music devotees of earlier generations often gathered together to make music, as shown in this painting. Violins, a flute and a lute adorn the room's posterior. The table is covered with sheet music, and the seats are upholstered in costly red velvet. The players' faces and clothes were apparently more important to the artist than the actual music making; his models sit somewhat stiffly, gazing at the artist/viewer. They, however, hold their instruments accurately: a viola da gamba, a lute, a theorbo and a kit (pochette). It is a portrait of a cultured society whose inhabitants are framed by symbols of the arts and sciences, music instruments and books.
