Guitar, 1680 - detail

Photographer: Janos Stekovics

A masterwork of the Venetian builder Antonio Mariani, this remarkable guitar is one of the museum's most beautiful and most important pieces. Its body was fashioned from ebony wood and lavishly ornamented with marquetry in mother-of-pearl and ivory. The instrument's peg and fingerboards as well as the intricately carved sound hole were also decorated with inlays of these precious materials. Showpieces such as this were for the most part the results of commissions from wealthy patrons. The guitar was used both as an accompaniment and solo instrument, and was especially popular in Italy, Spain and France from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
