Museum of Applied Arts
History
The Museum was founded in 1874 in order to improve public appreciation for higher standards of craftsmanship in the applied arts and industry. The collection eventually found its home in Leipzig's Grassi Museum, where it is still located today. The collection currently comprises some 60,000 objects and designs in all the traditional media. Further, the promotion of contemporary styles in the applied arts was and remains one of the Museum's main tenets.
The Museum's permanent collection boasts pieces from the Middle Ages up to the first half of the 20th century, primarily from Leipzig and the rest of Saxony. In addition, the Museum sponsors continually changing special exhibitions which demonstrate the variety inherent in the applied arts.
