Dermatology

Clinic and Polyclinic for Dermatology, Venerology and Allergology

The dermatologic clinic covers a broad spectrum of special consultations for allergology and occupational dermatology, autoimmune diseases and scleroderma, post-tumor treatment, andrological and sexual problems and HIV-infections. Furthermore, dermatologic baths and physiotherapy (o.g. psoriasis) complement the clinic's services. Dermatologic research is carried out in many clinical studies to test new medications as well as research areas such as mycology and basic research. Here, the treatment of and research on progressive scleroderma, autoimmune diseases and numerous allergies should be mentioned. The Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Dermatology has evaluated expertise in cell culture of nearly all relevant dermal cell types, in investigations on matrix metabolism of dermal fibroblasts, in cell activation experiments on fibroblasts and microvascular endothelial cells and others. A broad spectrum of experimental techniques is established: generation of monoclonal antibodies, immuno-histology; analysis, cloning and expression of mRNA and cDNA as well as various cell-biological assays to investigate physiological properties of dermal cells in vitro and in situ. The investigation of silica-mediated cell activation, of the consequences for dermal matrix metabolism in context with silica-induced scleroderma has been a major concern of research for several years. The successful generation of monoclonal antibodies enabled the specific detection of dermal cells and provided a powerful tool for experimental work. Furthermore, modern techniques are applied to discover new genes that are involved in tumor - stroma interactions.
