Department of Pathomorphology, Medical College
Medical College, Jagiellonian University Kraków

The Department of Pathomorphology at the Jagiellonian University is one of the largest pathology departments in Poland. It covers more than 70 000 surgical pathology diagnostic cases a year. The Department is well equipped with histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and molecular pathology and genetic techniques. In addition to diagnostic pathology the Department is very well experienced in experimental pathology. This is especially associated with animal experiments (experimental gastroenterology) and tissue culture (immunopathology, oncology, virology). This also includes experimental immunology of the skin in rats and routine direct immunofluorescence of the human skin. Immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology and ultrastructure using transmission electron microscopy are routinely used to studies of experimental gastroenterology, as well as tumor pathology, lung pathology, cardiopathology, hematopathology. The Department can perform histochemical enzymatic studied in frozen tissue and is routinely equipped with more than 100 immunohistochemical markers of tumors. Molecular techniques include PCR, RT-PCR, SSCP, protein truncation test, gene rearrangement, gene sequencing. Quantitative morphometry is studied with a special morphometric system.
