Sorbian Studies are concerned with the academic study of the Sorbian languages, their literature and culture. The history of an institutional framework for Sorbian Studies in Germany began in the 1950s with the foundation of the Sorbian Ethnological Institute in Bautzen and the Sorbian Institute in Leipzig. This area of research, together with the training of schoolteachers for Sorbian and courses leading to Bachelor and Masters degrees at the University of Leipzig, are unique in the world.

We need qualified and highly educated graduates, above all in schools and other institutions in Lower Lusatia in Brandenburg and Upper Lusatia in Saxony, as the local Sorbian-speaking populations in both areas are recognized as a linguistic minority. As a result, many parents expect the teaching of Sorbian to be guaranteed by the state in the bilingual schools. We therefore offer our male and female students a course of study, which is practical, has a solid academic base and develops and strengthens their abilities and awareness of their own mother tongue and its culture.
