Abstract:
What determines memory stability? I will present our data showing that distinct synaptic vesicle populations contribute to the labile and consolidated memories, which are simultaneously formed following odor-shock associative learning in fruit flies. These distinct synaptic mechanisms explain the selective loss of labile memory triggered by traumatic perturbations after learning. Long-term olfactory memory lasting days is known to require de novo protein synthesis. If time allows, I will show our recent progress on translational profiling. We identified groups of proteins, whose synthesis is accelerated upon neuronal stimulation.
