In a press release issued today, the association German U15, of which Leipzig University is a member, expressed its determination to go ahead with admissions, teaching and examinations in the summer semester 2020. The network believes that this is in the interest of students, of school pupils who are about to begin their studies, but also of the business community and wider society. The universities are keen to assume their share of responsibility for the future of our society even in the exceptional circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the press release, the network states that discontinuing teaching and examinations in the summer semester 2020 would have considerable consequences, with a sudden increase in student numbers in the following semesters having a knock-on effect on standards as early as the winter semester 2020. This is why all of the German U15 universities are working hard to establish a largely digital system of teaching and examinations for the summer semester. Important aspects include offering courses and examinations in digital form, expanding the necessary IT infrastructure, supporting teaching staff, developing innovative approaches to teaching formats that cannot be offered online, and coming up with flexible solutions for taking exams originally scheduled for the winter semester 2019/2020.
