Abstract

After studying / research studies at the University of Leipzig, research assistant and since 2008 head of the Namingcenter / name advice center. In addition to name RESEARCH, name TEACHING (in the elective area of the humanities and social sciences) and name ADVICE (reports on first and last names) determine the work of the center. As a mediator between theory and practice, public relations (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and numerous interviews are part of everyday work.

Main focus:


In the introductory module, the broad range of academic occupation with proper names (in particular, but not only: personal names and place names) and their relation to the various, mostly humanities, disciplines are conveyed. The module introduces the "world of proper names" and illuminates its historical, sociological, linguistic and system-theoretical aspects. The focus is on the meaning of proper names for the various sub-areas of linguistics, but also for numerous other disciplines. Diverse aspects result from dealing with the world of proper names that surround us in everyday life (personal names, local names, street names, trade names, etc.) with numerous current references.The following module is about in-depth knowledge of the category "personal name" in all its complex aspects (historical, linguistic, etc. issues) as well as content and methods of personal name research. The focus is on the development of naming systems (first names, surnames, surnames, etc.) in European Cultures, as well as the meaning of names as witnesses to social conditions (religion, minorities, contact zones, etc.) is discussed, introducing the practice of archive work, possible sources for a "family archive" and questions about name advice, in cooperation with the Name Advice Center at the University of Leipzig.
