Abstract

Dr. Uwe Krüger is research assistant in the Department of Journalism at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies and research coordinator of the Center for Journalism and Democracy (JoDem) at Leipzig University.

Born 1978 in Leipzig, he grew up in Borsdorf (Saxony) and in Bergen on the island of Rügen. He studied journalism and political science in Leipzig and Rostov-on-Don (Russia), worked as a trainee at the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" and as editor for the media magazine "Message". For his book "Mainstream – Why we don't trust the media anymore” and his PhD thesis on social networks of German journalists in the elite milieu, he received the Günter Wallraff Award for Journalism Criticism from the News Enlightenment Initiative in 2016.

He is co-founder of the German Network for Critical Communication Science (Netzwerk Kritische Kommunikationswissenschaft). 2018–2019 he was member of the Broadcasting Counciliation of the public broadcaster MDR.

After his PhD thesis on networks between leading German journalists and elites from politics and business, Dr. Uwe Krüger focuses on the issues trust in journalism, journalistic quality, journalistic roles and journalistic ethics.


In the context of the Lying Press ("Lügenpresse") debate, Krüger examines which factors influence trust and mistrust in media and journalism with qualitative methods and a special focus on the population in the Free State of Saxony. In addition, he is dedicated to the trend of "constructive journalism", focusing on questions of the theoretical foundation, journalistic roles and journalism education. Besides that, Dr. Krüger is researching the field of non-profit organisations of cross-border investigative journalism and the climate harmfulness of products of TV and Youtube advertising.

Dr. Uwe Krüger's teaching focus is journalism education. He teaches methodical research, journalistic ethics and theories of journalism research and supervises journalistic innovation projects as well as research projects. In addition to theoretical elements, the teaching includes high practical components (research and production of journalistic content) with accompanying reflection.

  • Recherchieren (M.Sc. Journalismus, WiSe 2023/24)

    Im Seminar "Recherchieren" werden Grundregeln des Methodischen Recherchierens ("Von außen nach innen", "Vom Sachverhalt zur Deutung", Fakten- und Quellencheck, Umgang mit Quellen u.a.) diskutiert und eingeübt. In Gruppenarbeit werden konflikthaltige Themen recherchiert und zu Nachrichtenmagazin-Geschichten aufbereitet.

  • Theorien der Journalismusforschung (M.Sc. Journalismus)

    In diesem Seminar werden kommunikationswissenschaftliche Theorien und Ansätze, die einen direkten Bezug zum Journalismus, seiner Produktion oder Rezeption haben, vorgestellt und diskutiert. Es ist als Lektüreseminar konzipiert; gelesene Texte werden mit einem kollaborativen Reflexionsdokument, Referaten und Diskussionen durchdrungen.

  • Journalistische Ethik (M.Sc. Journalismus)

    Das Seminar widmet sich Grundfragen und Anwendungsfällen der journalistischen Ethik. Es werden zentrale theoretische Ansätze, die wesentlichen Normen (z. B. Pressekodex des Deutschen Presserats) und Strategien zur Abwägung und Konfliktlösung behandelt. Methodisch kommen Referate, Diskussionen, Rollenspiele zu konkreten Fallbeispielen u.a. zur Anwendung.

  • Innovationsprojekt (M.Sc. Journalismus)

    In diesem Projektseminar wird in Zusammenarbeit mit einem Praxispartner ein journalistisches Angebot, Produkt oder Format konzipiert und praktisch umgesetzt. Dies erfolgt projektorientiert und im Team. Projekte visieren insbesondere die Bereiche Crossmedia-, Online-, Social-Media- oder Mobil-Journalismus an sowie den Umgang mit und den Einbezug von Daten und Algorithmen.
