Abstract

Prof. Dr. Maria-Elisabeth Krautwald-Junghanns is a German veterinarian. She made contributions to the development of pet, zoo and wild bird medicine as well as - within the framework of numerous projects financed by the German Ministry for Agriculture - to appropriate keeping and breeding of poultry. She successfully developed non-invasive diagnostic methods in birds such as sex determination in fertilized hen's eggs.

She is currently director of the Clinic for Birds and Reptiles at the University of Leipzig, appointed member of the National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina, and Academia Net as well as Diplomate / Residency program director of the corresponding European College (ECAMS / ECZM) and specialist veterinarian for poultry / ZB pet, zoo and wild birds / reptiles.

Research focus: diseases of birds, non-invasive diagnostics, influence of husbandry and breeding on bird diseases and animal welfare.

In 2015 she received the Felix Wankel Animal Welfare Award, among others.
