Abstract

Thomas Rakebrand, M.A., is scientific assistant at the Chair of Communication Science under Prof. Dr. Patrick Donges at the Department of Communication an Media Science, University of Leipzig. His dissertation deals with 'intellectual property' (creative practices) as an issue of regulation. This is considered from a communication science perspective on governance as a multidimensional process. The focus of consideration is on the (endogenous and exogenous) understanding of formal and informal rules of creative practices of communities. Another focus in teaching and research is the importance of science and research ethics in communication science.

In my dissertation project I deal with 'intellectual property' (in the sense of creative practices) as the subject of a multidimensional governance. The focus of consideration is on the (endogenous and exogenous) understanding of formal and informal rules of creative practices in communities

My further scientific interest relates to questions, challenges and approaches of science and research ethics and their significance for communication science. The focus is in particular on the implementation of ethical considerations in empirical analysis and methodological teaching.

My empirical focus is especially on qualitative social scientific methods to reconstruct contexts of meaning such as interviews, observations and group discussions as well as discourse-analytical approaches.

In my teaching activities at the university I focus on qualitative empirical methods for the investigation of communication science issues. The students should be enabled to conceive and critically reflect on empirical research projects. On the other hand, the focus of the courses is on dealing with science and research ethics as a specific aspect of critical thinking

and its significance for communication science. Furthermore, phenomena of the media system and media change are the subject of my teaching.
