The internationalization of the Free State is conveyed by the transnational aspect of the training research groups. It is a collaboration with the Vanderbilt University (VU, Nashville, Tennesse, USA), and constitutes the scientific basis for the successful raising of further significant external funding in the framework of joint projects.
The bilateral partnership of the universities can look back on 30 research projects and 12 joint publications since 2007. In cooperation network are currently more than 20 scientists in 14 research projects active. In recent years more than 20 PhD-student and five undergraduate were enabled to complete a research stay or a research internship. A special feature is the annual summer school. The existing cooperation agreement (MoU ) enables student exchange by providing travel funds. They will be promoted through the Vanderbilt University, Leipzig University and the PbF3.

The requested ESF Research Groups serves the training of the academic growth and enable them in context of joint research project for knowledge and technology transfer and networking between the participating schools and businesses. Besides Saxon companies ( Pattern Expert Leipzig GmbH and QIAGEN GmbH) also companies of central Germany and Germany are involved, which are active in the field of drug development and therapy: OntoChem GmbH (Halle ) and Intana GmbH ( Martinsried ) are available as partners.
