Research in the Basic Functions of the Nervous System

Brain Dynamics

This profile area focuses on the basic functions of the human nervous system. These include movement control, language, attentiveness, perception and memory, and their changeability.

The institutions involved in this profile area belong to Leipzig University's life and natural sciences as well as to all three Leipzig-based Max Planck Institutes.

Research is conducted on various levels, from the observation of intracellular processes to the interaction of nerve cells inside the brain with the entire organism. Particular emphasis is put on the human brain and its distinctive features. Research aims include a more profound understanding of the way the brain works, how diseases attack the human nervous system, and how new ways to treat these diseases could be developed.
