Sustainable Systems and Biodiversity

This profile area investigates the transformation of energy systems and a sustainable approach to the resource of biodiversity.

The institutions doing research in this area belong to the natural sciences as well as to economics. The following faculties are particularly involved: the Faculty of Chemistry and Mineralogy with Prof. Dr. Roger Gläser, the Faculty of Economics and Management Science with Prof. Dr. Thomas Bruckner, the Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology, and the centre iDiv (funded by the German Research Foundation) with Prof. Dr. Christian Wirth. On top of that, several non-university partner institutions form transdisciplinary networks that are investigating this topic as well.

The researchers' objective is to develop environmentally friendly methods of catalysis, to identify innovative technologies and strategies in the realm of energy production, and to conduct research in the basics of a sustainable approach to biodiversity. The following questions illustrate the links between the three areas of sustainability research: How can energy landscapes be economically efficient while simultaneously maximising biodiversity and ecosystem services? How can we optimise the use of biomass as a raw material by adopting new methods of catalysis? Which synergies exist between the aims and mechanisms of climate conventions and biodiversity conventions? This subject is approached in a number of ways, from laboratory development over forecast models to ecological experiments at the landscape scale.
