Ideas competition for new research centres

Two major research centres will be established in Lusatia in Saxony and in the Central German mining district. They will provide sustainable jobs that will promote structural change in these regions after coal is phased out.

Success in Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s science competition

The Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC), in which Leipzig University is involved, will be expanded in the coming years into a major research centre based in Central Germany that will play a decisive role in shaping structural change in the region after the coal phase-out. This was announced by Federal Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger on 29 September 2022 at a joint press conference in Berlin with the Ministers President of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, Michael Kretschmer and Dr Reiner Haseloff. The CTC is led by Professor Peter Seeberger, Director of the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPIKG) in Potsdam. The major research centre will use a transdisciplinary approach and structured partnerships between science, industry and civil society to transform chemistry into a circular economy.
