By strategically developing our core domains, we are strengthening those areas in which we achieve particular impact in academic, societal and institutional terms.

All our areas of excellence, high-potential areas and emerging fields fall within these three core domains and link them across disciplinary boundaries:

The core domains unite the University’s principal thematic strengths and consistently focus on global challenges in health, the environment, society and technology.

Distinctive research: The Leipzig Way

Our university develops its research priorities along the Leipzig Way, which prioritises interdisciplinarity, a strong track record in securing external funding, and the topicality and relevance of its research. By consistently developing our profile, we secure leading positions in national and international competition. This cycle of profile development is rooted in the broad disciplinary expertise of the University’s 14 faculties and strengthens it through collaboration across the emerging fields, high-potential areas and areas of excellence.

The effectiveness of the Leipzig Way was clearly demonstrated in May 2025 with the approval of Leipzig University’s first Cluster of Excellence, the Leipzig Center of Metabolism – Understanding and Improving Metabolic Health (LeiCeM), which commenced its work on 1 January 2026.

These five research areas are characterised by a high level of academic excellence, a strong international profile, and a proven track record of securing external funding through a range of collaborative projects. Each area of excellence has its own thematically aligned graduate school within the Leipzig University Research Academy, offers research-oriented degree programmes, and is supported by modern research infrastructure (RIS). In addition, each engages in knowledge and technology transfer in ways specific to its field.

High-potential areas represent particularly high-performing fields of research at Leipzig University, characterised by a strong international profile and dynamic acquisition of external funding. They build on successful emerging fields, foster excellent interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration, and support academic talent. As key drivers of the University’s research profile and excellence, they lay the foundation for future Clusters of Excellence.

Emerging fields are innovative research areas in their early stages that may grow into long-term research priorities at Leipzig University. They serve as a strategic instrument to identify and develop promising new research directions early on.

In 2025, eleven emerging fields were selected through a transparent, university-wide selection process. They reflect the breadth of the research carried out at Leipzig, are initially funded for a period of five years, and provide a structured framework for developing the research profile and preparing the ground for future excellence.

Interdisciplinary collaboration: Synergies and innovation

Leipzig University actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across its faculties and institutes. Our researchers work in diverse teams to develop innovative solutions to the challenges of our time. By integrating perspectives from different disciplines, we strengthen and enhance the scientific excellence of our research.

The LeipzigLab promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and thus helps put the Leipzig Way into practice. It is based on cooperation between representatives of different disciplines and allows researchers to respond rapidly to emerging scientific challenges. It currently hosts three working groups focusing on Historical Anthropospheres, Plants and Politics, and Climate Discourse.

These international partnerships enable the exchange of knowledge and resources as well as the implementation of joint research projects. Our researchers are part of global networks and contribute to addressing global challenges. 

Vision for the future: Committed to excellence

Leipzig University is working to further strengthen its position as a centre of excellence in research and teaching by 2032. To achieve this, it is creating the conditions necessary for research, education, and knowledge and technology transfer at the highest level. Interdisciplinary research consortia of outstanding quality will contribute to the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments.

Through this comprehensive approach and its clearly defined objectives, Leipzig University aims to continue making significant contributions to scientific knowledge and consolidate its position as a national leader in research, with a strong international standing.
