About Leipzig Alumni International

Leipzig Alumni International (LAI) was founded in 1998 as an independent project at Leipzig University’s International Centre. LAI maintains and strengthens contact between Leipzig University and its alumni, promotes the exchange of knowledge and experiences, and facilitates international collaboration.

The following groups are considered alumni of Leipzig University:

  • former students who acquired an academic degree
  • former exchange students
  • former researchers
  • former visiting lecturers

Our alumni network is also open to the following persons:

  • all current students
  • all current researchers
  • all current staff
  • sponsors and friends of Leipzig University

The international alumni network currently comprises more than 2300 alumni from over 110 different countries. The main regions of origin can be traced back to the former GDR links to countries like Russia, Vietnam and Ethiopia, but also the extensive contacts Leipzig University has had since 1990 with universities in the United Kingdom, France, Spain and the US.

The documentary Wegbeschreibungen - Internationale Studierende an der Universität Leipzig 1989-2012 (language: german) shows personal stories of international alumni and University staff from the time before, during and after German reunification.
