Dr. Václav Velčovský becomes a member of the international alumni network

We are very pleased to announce that the Deputy Minister of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic, Dr. Václav Velčovský, became a member of Leipzig University’s international alumni network in November 2017. He sent us ‘proof’ in the form of a photo of the invitation letter he received from LAI. Born in Ostrava in the Czech Republic, from 2007-2008 Velčovský studied Slavic Studies as an exchange student at Leipzig University. He was awarded his doctorate in 2012 for a philological study on the relationship between the German and Czech languages.

Leipzig academic becomes honorary member of the University of Szeged in Hungary

On 10 November 2017, Dr. Josef Bischof, a former research assistant of Leipzig University’s Faculty of Law, visited the LAI office. The Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Szeged in Hungary named Bischof an honorary member of the university on 15 September 2017. He was honoured for his services to German-Hungarian relations in teaching and academia. Special mention was made of his 11 years of teaching German criminal law through the Erasmus programme.

Following in his father´s footsteps

More than 50 years ago, his father came to study in Leipzig – and now his son wanted to get to know this place. Lawrence Onuora from Nigeria studied medicine at Leipzig University from 1965 until 1973, receiving his doctorate in the field of neuropathology in 1974. His son Cosmas is also a physician and works as Assistant Professor at Northeastern Ohio Medical University in the US.

In September 2017, Cosmas Onuora visited Leipzig University and went looking for clues. Together with the medical alumni Dr. Karl-Heinz (“Kasimir”) Krämer (graduated in 1956) and Professor Steffen Schulz (graduated in 1969) from the alumni association of Leipzig’s Faculty of Medicine, he explored the medical campus and the Augustusplatz campus, and researched his father’s study documents in the University archive.
