Starting your studies at Leipzig University

This comes next after your application

You have submitted an application to Leipzig University. These are the steps you should now take:

1. Register with AlmaWeb & confirm you study place

In the video above, Lina explains what you need to do after having applied to Leipzig University: 

  • first: register with AlmaWeb, the portal for applicants
  • after you have received your Letter of Admission, confirm your study place (very important)
  • register for Leipzig University’s IT-Services
  • upload a passport photograph for your student ID
  • transfer the semester contribution

2. Arrange for your stay in Leipzig

In this video, Lina explains what to take care of when organising your stay in Leipzig.

3. Enrol at Leipzig University & join us for Welcome Week


After arriving in Leipzig, you will first have to officially become a student of the University, i.e. you need to enrol. Once you have done that, you are entitled to start studying. For enrolment, please personally come to the Campus in the city centre.

Dates and places for enrolment for international students // winter semester 2017/18




Make sure to bring along:

  • your Letter of Admission (original letter)
  • your passport (It should contain a valid student visa in case you are a Non-EU-citizen.) 
  • your identity card (In case you are a EU-citizen.)
  • 2 passport photographs
  • proof of sufficient health insurance valid in Germany (You have the option of taking out this insurance upon your arrival in Leipzig.)

Welcome Week

Before classes start, you are invited to take part in our Welcome Week on campus. It offers a programme of social activities and a welcome party. In addition, you will be provided support in administrative issues.

  • dates: 28.09. – 06.10.2017
  • place: Main Campus (Neues Seminargebäude 3rd floor, Universitätsstraße 1, 04109 Leipzig)

Services - support for administrative matters

  • advice in matters of visa and residence permit
  • registration at the Resident Services Office
  • health insurance
  • advice concerning your studies
  • tour throught the University Library etc.

Programme - your chance to discover your new home city and to get in touch with your fellow students.

The workshops help you to get ready for studying in Geman (free of charge). 

Registration: Sign up online at the Academic Lab's website (form beneath the workshop description). If you have registered successfully, you will receive an email.

We recommend: Induction Week for new students

Attend the central Induction Day on 02.10.2017 on campus and learn more about:

  • fundamental aspects of your study programme
  • how to organize your studies

On Induction Day, you can choose among a variety of lectures that are directed at bachelor or master students or teacher education students. In addtion, you are invited get to know the services and staff of many UL support units and initiatives.

During the Induction Week (02.10.2017 and the following days):

  • UL faculties and institutes offer events that focus on individual study programmes.
  • You have the opportunity to see a study advisor for more specific queries.

4. Register with the authorities etc.
