Urlaubssemester (leave semesters) for international students

The following information is addressed to international students. For students from Germany, the Student Office provides further information on how to take semester leaves.

International degree students at Leipzig University have the option of taking up to two leave semesters upon request (Section 21 of the Immatrikulationsordnung/ Enrolment Regulation).

If you wish to take three or more leave semesters, the Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs has to issue an individual approval in writing. This procedure is unnecessary in case you are taking leave semesters for one of the following reasons: pregnancy/ parental leave, internship abroad (proof is needed), completion of a service position (proof is needed).

No leave can be granted for the first semester of your chosen study programme or if you enrol for the first time in a later semester. Nor can leave be granted for past semesters, unless the requirements of Section 21 para. 2 sentences 3 and 4 (illness) are met.

Leave semesters do not count as study semesters. Periods of study abroad can be counted as study semesters on request. The decision is made by the relevant examination committee.

Course and exam achievements can be produced during the leave semesters.

How to apply for leave semesters

You must submit the completed Antrag auf Beurlaubung (Application for leave Semesters) to the International Centre within the re-enrolment period.
