For the bachelor programme: knowledge of English B2

For the master programme: bachelor degree required, command of both written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic (to the level of the ‘Lehrbuch des modernen Arabisch‘ (Krahl et al.)), English B2, aptitude test


The subject of the study programme in Arabic Studies and Oriental Philology is communication of the Arabic language (ability to read and speak it) and a sound knowledge of the cultural, historical, linguistic, geographical, economic and legal position and developments in the Arab and Islam world. The study programme comprises the following areas:
A: Culture and history of the Middle East
B: Arabic language and translation studies
C: Islamic law
D: Social geography and economics of the Middle East

With its combination of specialist knowledge and practice, the bachelor degree in Arabic Studies communicates a thorough command of Arabic and extensive knowledge in areas A to C. Based on a good knowledge of Arabic and areas A to C, the master study programme in Arabic studies aims to provide an in-depth insight into the theoretical and practical aspects of Arabic studies and Islamic studies. On completion of the study programme, students should be able to process academic issues independently and use them as a basis for research and professional development.
